t Camp Curry late in the afternoon justas the people were coming from their days walks,said a young lady to me. I thought I had neverseen such disreputable looking people. Their bootswere muddy, their hair was dishevelled, their faceswere flushed and sunburnt. But in a day or two Iwas coming in from long walks in just the samecondition myself. But who that can walk andclimb would forego the thrilling pleasure of thelong climb to Glacier Point, and the long climb pastNevada and Vernal Falls, and do^vn again into theValley? Who would miss the long climb up to theYosemite Falls, where one from a perilous and yetprotected vantage point just above the Falls seesthat great volume of water launch itself for theawful plunge into the air, and so down into theValley? Fortunately, there are sturdy mules andhorses, sure-footed and plodding, for those whoprefer riding to climbing. No one need miss thetruly grand experience of the view from GlacierPoint, where by staying over night at the hotel one

There is HalfDome, looking as if a gigantic hand had thrust itup through the earth and into the air, leaving itsother half far, far below. There stretches beforeone a vast, upper country of irregular table landsand peaks, many still white with snow. One isreally looking far out over the remote regions ofthe snowy, pine-covered, high Sierras. We took a day for a long excursion toClouds Rest. This meant twenty-two miles ofmule riding, but it also meant an even more com-prehensive and exalted view from the mountainstop, of frozen lakes below, deep canyons, loftymountain peaks where storms were raging far away,and solitary table lands. Only people of endur-ance can take such a jaunt, as ones joints growvery weary and aching from the slow riding hourafter hour.
