a continual shake, shake, shake while a thinstream of water pours over them. They are a littleless slanting than the board of a womans washtubwould be, and yet they lie somewhat hke a wash-board. The shaking of the board and the actionof the water combine to roll down the heavy grainsof copper. It seems a simple process, and yet theregulation of the boards motion and the angleof its slant are calculated to a nicety. There werehundreds of these concentrators at work sepa-rating the copper from its native earth. We sawalso the great smelting furnaces and realized howit must have been possible for the men who pre-pared the furnace for the burning of Shadrach, Me-shach, and Abednego to be burned to death them-selves. What a fearful heat rolled out as oneof the furnace doors was opened and a moltenstream of white-hot slag was raked into the gutterbelow! BY THE LINCOLN HIGHWAY 149 sign was near it in both English and Greek. Itread, Keep away from crane. Keep clear andstand from under. As we left Steptoe Valley and came down a longslope into Spring Valley, we crossed ShellbournePass under the shadow of the Shellbourne range.We passed some young people from Detroit, thegentleman driving his car. We also passed somemen with their laden burros taking supplies to thesheepmen in the mountain ranges. These sheepmenlive their lives apart from the world for months at atime, seeing only the man who brings their suppliesat intervals. We had luncheon at Andersons ranch, where theytreated us very hospitably. I judged that this wasa Mormons household, as Mormon marriage cer-tificates hung upon the wall and as the DeseretWeekly was evidently its newspaper connectionwith the outside world. Here our friend Mr. N.took on board a young man from the ranch whowished to get back to Salt Lake City. This youngfellow was delighted to have such a ride and Mr.
