I CLIMBED up to the village, accompanied by oneof my camel men, but our friend the giant hadpreceded us and given the warning that 2,ferenghihad arrived, and we were met on the road by anumber of boys and men who were running downthe hill to see the new arrival. The people werenot particularly respectful, and freely passed re-marks, not always complimentary—in fact, mostoffensive; but as I was bent on seeing all thatthere was to be seen, I paid no heed and continuedto go up. The camel man, who was getting quite alarmed—especially when a stone or two were flung atus—begged me to return to camp, but I wouldnot, and as I had my rifle with me I thought Icould hold my own, and certainly did not wish thenatives to think that an Englishman feared them.
