L'Acqua Alta se produit à Venise quand la marée haute se conjugue avec des basses pressions et que le Sirocco, se met à souffler, ce qui "retient" l'eau dans la lagune. La place San Marco est la première inondée car elle est plus basse que d'autres parties de la ville. En réalité, l'Acqua Alta ne dure pas longtemps, lorsqu'elle se produit la circulation des piétons dans les zones inondées s'effectue sur des passerelles.
