Text Appearing Before Image:
-26 The Preface THE PREFACE THE Iliad is a tragedy. It is without the buoyantspirit that speaks in every tale of the Odysseyand makes the latter such a perennial sourceof joy for readers of all ages. The religion of theIliad is fatalism, destiny and the arbitrary will of thegods mock the best efforts of the hero, shatter hislance, and break his bowstring. It may be ques-tioned whether a story with such an atmosphere ofgloom should be given to children. But on the otherhand, the heroes of the Iliad are great men ; whatthey do they do with all their might; they are will-ing to work for others without reward ; and they arewithal so clean, brave, healthy, and honest, thatalmost any of them is worthy the admiration of aboy of ten. If he feels the pathos of the story, andat the same time learns the lesson that a hero is ableand willing to do more and get less for it than otherpeople, he will be influenced only for good by read-ing the brave old story.
