THE RIVERS:
The river Yonne flows south-north, crossing the map from bottom to top at about 1/3rd of the picture (5 kilometres (3.1 mi)) from the left edge. Going downstream, the river Yonne meets the following settlements (LB: left bank ; RB: right bank):
Pré gilbert (Prégilbert, RB, with mill) » and its hamlet (« hameau de Pré gilbert »), the abbey of Crisenon, Sainte Pallaye (RB , village related to the story of saint Gerdain of Auxerre), Bazarnes (LB , with mill), le Maunoir (castle, LB), and Cravant « ou Crevant », RB: a locally important town; near a small island on the Yonne river just upstream of Cravant, on the left bank is the « Grand Moulin of Cravant » (« Great Mill of Cravant »), and a bridge that links the island and the right bank. In Cravant there is another smaller mill on a small tributary that comes from N-D d'Arbeau (village, by a ) and meets the right bank of the river Yonne at Cravant. Immediately downstream of Cravant is « St Nicolas les Ports », a name that indicates that tthe ports have become a village in their own right and settlements as important as the port activity. There is also just downstream « le dépôt des Sels » ; as salt was a good part of compulsory tax payments (« la gabelle »), this says that Vermenton had a steady and relatively high income from that sale, held some sort of guard and probably also held juridictional functions as well.
On its right – east side – flows its tributary the river Cure, coming in from the lower edge at about 1/3 of the picture from the right side. It first runs south-north for about 4 kilometres (2.5 mi), meeting Lucy-sur-Cure (village, RB), Reigny (abbey, RB), Vermanton, RB, with « Poste » (postal relay) on its upstream side and on the downstream side « les Ports » that indicate boat activity on the river. Two mills just downstream of Vermenton : Berty and les Grds Moulins (« the Great Mills' »). At Vermanton the Cure runs westwards for about 2.6 kilometres (1.6 mi), meeting half-way through that stretch Accolay (village, LB) and in front of Accolay on the right bank the castle of Bertreau. It then goes northward again to meet the river Yonne at Cravant. 888 THE ROADS
The main road here is the « Route de Lyon par la Diligence », a major national road that runs here eastside of the rivers Yonne and Cure and divides itself at Vermanton: one branch goes south-east to Joux-le-Châtel and Joux la Ville; the other branch, nearer to the river Cure, is the main road that joins further south with the «  route de Paris à Lyon par Viteaux » (« road from Paris to Lyon via Vitteaux »).
The other road in the picture, runs on the left bank of the river Yonne. It goes up north to near Auxerre, and southway to Trucy, Mailly le Château where it crosses the river Yonne then down to Merry sur Yonne and Châtel-Cenʆoy (Châtel-Censoir) where it stops. Crossing the Yonne is not easy, as the left embankment of its valley is edged with a high steep side, akin to a cliff in many places (the small village of « le Saussois » that stands near Merry sur Yonne, is and has long been famous among alpinists ans rock-climbers for its « rocher du Saussois »).

Châtel-Cenʆoy is just across the border from Burgundy to Nivernais (Nevers county). The same border shows here near the right edge of the map. On the river Yonne Ste Pallaye, on the river Cure Lucy-sur Cure, Reilly, Vermenton and its hamlets, the Bertreau castle (but not Accolay on the left bank), Cravant and its villages, are in Burgundy ; On the Yonne Pré gilbert and its hamlet, Crisenon and its hamlets la Thuillerie (RB) and le Bas Coin (LB), Bazarnes, le Maunoir and other hamlets further west, plus Accolay on the river Cure, are in the next county.

OTHER A small river cuts the upper left corner of the map: the Val de Mercy.

The other villages or hamlets not yet cited are, on the west side of the rivers: Mazière, Chap. St Quentin, Tuillerie, St Marien, le Bouchet ; on the east side of the rivers: xxx, la Femme morte, Vau du Puits de Vermenton, Vaux St Martin, Chap. St Antoine on the road to Lyon between Vermenton and N-D d'Arbeau, Cheuilli (Cheuilly).
