Bunn, and others of Springfield, whoknew him well, have averred to the writer that Lin-coln was a regular attendant at the services of thePresbyterian church in that city; but he united withno denomination. From childhood he was a readerof the English Bible, and became more devoted inhis study of it during his Presidency. He was par-ticularly interested in the New Testament, but waswell acquainted with the Old. Writing to Speedat one time, he said: I am profitably engaged inreading the Bible. Take all of this book upon reasonthat you can and the balance upon faith, and youwill live and die a better man. Few men have afforded a story of religious evo-lution more interesting than Lincolns. His experi-ence, perhaps, was not strikingly exceptional; but itwas definite and personally conducted, and broughtsatisfaction to him in trouble.
