Early that day the army went into camp,near Frederick, and Generals Lee, Longstreet,Jackson, and for a time Jeb Stuart, hadthdr headquarters near each other in Bestsgrove. Hither in crowds came the goodpeople of Frederick, especially the ladies, as toa fair. General Jackson, still suffering fromhis hurt, kept closely to his tent, busying him-self with maps and official papers, and de-clined to see visitors. Once, however, whencalled to General Lees tent, two young girlswaylaid him, surrounded him, paralyzed himwith smiles and embraces and questions, andthen jumped into their carriage and drove offrapidly, leaving him there, cap in hand, bow-ing, blushing, and speechless.
