Its firstlively effects, like acloud of dust drivenbefore a coming show-er, appeared in the star-tled rabbits, squirrels,quail, and other game,flying wildly hither andthither in evident terror,and escaping, wherepossible, into adjacentclearings. The foremost men ofDoless brigade tookabout half an hourto strike our advancepicket on the pike. This picket, of course, created no delay. Fifteenminutes later he reached our skirmishers, whoseem to have resisted effectively for a fewminutes, for it required a main line to dislodgethem. Doles says, concerning the next checklie received, after a resistance of about tenminutes we drove him (Devens) from his posi-tions on the left and carried his battery of twoguns, caissons, and horses.
