The Emperor Napoleon, how-ever, was unable to cross the remainder of hisarmy, as the Archduke Charles sent downfire ships, and immense rafts, which the forceof the current of the Danube caused to breakthe bridges of Napoleon faster than he couldreplace them; so lie was forced to retreat tothe island of Lobau. He then began to drawhis troops from Italy, from Spain, and fromFrance, and in six months an army of onehundred and eighty thousand men was concen-trated in the vicinity of the island of Lobau.With the greatest care and scientific execution,Napoleon had his bridges so constructed anddefended that the Austrians were unable toinjure them. One of the most difficult anddangerous of the operations in war is thecrossing of an army over a river like theDanube, with a powerful enemy on the otherside. The Archduke Charles had his army in astrong and commanding position, one flankresting on the Danube, the other extendingout to the vicinity of the village of Wagram.The flank in the vicinity of Wagram was theweak point of the position, which Napoleondetected at once; he, therefore, ordered thetwo corps of Bernadotte and Massena, tomake a circuitous march around Wagram,and attack the flank and rear of the Austrians. At the same time to prevent the Austrianarmy from changing front or sending anyforce to interfere with the march of these twocorps, he attacked the Austrians in front withthe bulk of his army. The splendid fightingof the Archduke Charles held the Frencharmy in check, and Napoleon, seeing a des-perate effort must be made, organized a selectcorps of eleven thousand men with one hun-dred pieces of artillery, which he placed under
