Text Appearing Before Image:
The curiosity in the Unionarmy to see him was so great that the sol-diers lined the sides of the road. Many ofthem uncovered as he passed, and he invari-ably returned the salute. One man had an echo Austin Brockenbrough asked, How is it? Well, said I,we 11 say our prayers and go in like men. Not as bad asthat? Every bit; see for yourself He went up and cameback looking very grave. Meanwhile, from the east, north-west,and north-east our cannon burst in thunder and were answeredby the Federal guns from Bolivar Heights. We were down in aravine ; we could see nothing; we could only hear. Presently, along our line came the words, Prepare to charge ! We movedsteadily up the hill ; the sun had just risen ; some one said:* Colonel, what is that on the fort ? Halt! cried the Colonel; they have surrendered. A glad shout burst from ten thousandmen, and it was a rouser. We got into the place as soon as wecould, but the way was so difficult it took us a half hour. STONEWALL JACKSON LN MARYLAND. 293

Jones andLawton, leaving directions to McLaws andWalker to follow the next morning. He leftA. P. Hill behind to finish up with HarpersFerry. His first order had been to take po-sition at Shepherds
