Rodeswas first posted on the hill, the slope of which is seen on the left; posed to me was D. H. Hills corps (fifteenthousand) and a part if not the whole of Long-streets, and perhaps a portion of Jacksons,—probably thirty thousand in all. (Page 13,Volume XIX.) The mistake of the Federalcommander in regard to General Longstreetwas natural, since he was misled by the LostDispatch. But it seems strange that the UnitedStates Engineers should repeat the blunder,with the light of history thrown for ten yearsupon all the incidents of the battle.
