At his request, Iascended to the roof of the building preparedto execute his design, but with instructions toawait the issue of the possible contest atChalmette, some four miles below the centerof the city where our last line of defense wasestablished. I waited accordingly with theflag bent on to the halliards, and my gazefixed eagerly upon the approaching steamers. Suddenly quick Hashes leaping from theirdark sides recorded the fact that they wereabreast of the redoubts, but their tire wasdelivered without check to their speed, andin hardly more time than I take to tell of it,they were dark and silent once more.
