If Gen-eral Meade was not mistaken as to the timeof his starting, he must have been long de-layed in the thick woods, through which thefirst part of his march was made. Here is probably the best place to explainthe extraordinary caution of the Federals,which seemed so mysterious to us on that 14thof September. An order of General Lee, madewhile at Frederick, directing Jackson to captureHarpers Ferry, and Longstreet and myself togo to Boonsboro, had fallen into the handsof some Federals, who carried it to GeneralMcClellan. The fights of Sept. 14 were so distinct as to time and place, andthe positions of the troops were so often changed that anysingle map would be misleading without analysis : (1.) The earlymorning fight was mostly on the south side of Foxs Gap, betweenCoxs two Union brigades and Garlands brigade, the latter beingassisted on its left by a part of Colquitts brigade which was atTurners Gap. By ten oclock Garland had been killed and hisbrigade routed. (2.) Then Cox encountered G. B. Andersonsarriving brigade, repulsed it and fell back to his position in themorning. (3.) G.B.Anderson was then posted at Foxs Gap on bothsides of the old Sharpsburg road. D. H. Hills two other bri-gades came up towards noon, Ripley beingjoined to G. B. Ander-son, and Rodes being sent to occupy a hill on the north side ofTurners Gap, near where Garnett is placed on the map.
