Douglas seems to have had a great pro-pensity to such rencontres, of which the issuewas ordinarily his complete discomfiture, ashe had the untoward habit of attacking muchbigger and stronger men than himself. Heweighed at that time little, if anything, overa hundred pounds, yet his heart was so val-iant that he made nothing of assaulting menof ponderous flesh like Francis, or of greatheight and strength like Stuart. He sought aquarrel with the latter, during their canvass in1838, in a grocery, with the usual result. Abystander who remembers the incident saysthat Stuart jest mopped the floor with him.
