Text Appearing Before Image:
containedin the said resolutions is their reason for en-tering this protest. Reason enough for theLincolns and Luthers. He had many years of growth and devel-opment before him. There was a long dis-tance to be traversed between the guardedutterances of this protest and the heroic au-dacity which launched the proclamation ofemancipation. But the young man who dareddeclare, in the prosperous beginning of hispolitical life, in the midst of a communityimbued with slave-State superstitions, that hebelieved the institution of slavery was foundedboth on injustice and bad policy,—attackingthus its moral and material supports, while atthe same time recognizing all the constitutionalguarantees which protected it,— had in him themaking of a statesman and, if need be, a martyr. His whole career was to run in the lines markedout by these words, written in the hurry of aclosing session, and he was to accomplish fewacts, in that great history which God reservedfor him, wiser and nobler than this.
Text Appearing After Image:
THE SECOND DAY AT GETTYSBURG. BY THE CHIEF OF ARTILLERY OF THE ARMY OF THF. POTOMAC. OX June 30th General Meade at Taneytowneived information that the enemy wasadvancing on Gettysburg, and corps command-DStructed to hold their com-mand, in readiness to march against him. Thenext day, July 1st. Meade wrote to Reynoldsthat telegraphic intelligence from Couch, andthe movements reported by Buford, indicatedoncentration of the enemys army either atChambersburg, or at some point on a linedrawn from that place through Heidlersburgto York. Cnder these circumstances, Meadeinformed Reynolds that he had not yet de- cided whether it was his best policy to moveto attack before he knew more definitelyLees point of concentration. He seems, how-ever, soon to have determined not to advanceuntil the movements or position of the enemygave strong assurance of success ; and thatif the enemy took the offensive, he wouldwithdraw his own army from its actual posi-tions and form line of battle behind PipeCreek
