f-past nine and tenon the night of the 2d of May. Some of histroops had fighting in the woods before I left, but I am unable to say what was its character. On the morning of the 3d of May (Sunday)General Stuart was in command of Jacksonsforces, Jackson and A. P. Hill having beenwounded as reported by the prisoner takenthe night before. This line pre-sented a front to the enemy that could not beenfiladed or turned. Desultory fighting, espe-cially with artillery, was kept up on the 4thof May; but Hookers battle ended on the 3d,after the army had gained its new position. It is useless to speculate what GeneralHooker would have done if he had not beendisabled. Up to the evening of the 2d ofMay the enemy had suffered severely, whilethe Army of the Potomac had but few killedand
