Bolivar Heights in rear. General Hillhad been placed under arrest by GeneralJackson, before crossing the Potomac intoMaryland for disobedience of orders, and thecommand of his division devolved upon Gen-eral Branch, who was killed in the last attackat Antietam. Now believing a battle imminentGeneral Hill requested General Jackson toreinstate him in command of his division un-til the approaching engagement was over.No one could appreciate such an appeal morekeenly than General Jackson, and he at oncerestored General Hill to his command. Thework the Light Division did at Harpers Ferryand Sharpsburg proved the wisdom of Hillsrequest and of Jacksons compliance with it.During the 14th, while Jackson was fixinghis clamps on Harpers Ferry, McClellan waspushing against Lees divided forces at Tur-ners Gap. Hooker and Reno, under Burnside ever having given such an order, but said he gaveorders that if it became necessary to abandon theheights the guns were to be spiked and dismounted.—Editor.

I R G I N I A THE FIELD OF ANTIETAM. On the afternoon of September 16th, Hookers corps crossed atthe two fords and the bridge north of McClcllans headquarters. A.—From near sunset till dark Hooker engaged Hoods divis-ion (of Lonotteetl corps; about the East wood, marked Aonthe map. Hood was relieved by two brigades of Jacksons corps,which was in and behind the Dunker Church wood, C. B.—At dawn on the 17th, Hooker and Jackson began a terri-ble contest which raged in and about the famous corn-field, I,,and in the woods, A and C. Jacksons reserves regained thecorn-field. Hartsuffs brigade of Hookers corps and Mansfieldscorps charged through the corn-field into the lJunker Church wood, Mansfield being mortally wounded in front of the Eastwood. Jackson, with the aid of Hood, and a part of D. H. Hillsdivision, again cleared the Dunker Church wood. J. G.
