The position of Franklinsmen on the 12th with the configuration of theground had left no doubt in my mind as tofranklins intentions. I explained all this toflood, assuring him that the attack would beon Jackson. At the same time I ordered Hood,in case Jacksons line was broken, to wheelaround to his right and strike in on the at-tacking bodies, telling him that Pickett, withdivision, would be ordered to join in thek movement. These orders were given toboth division generals, and at the same timere advised that 1 would be attackednear my left center, and that I must be atit point to meet my part of the battle. Theywere also advised that my position was sowell defended I could have no other needof their troops.
