When Longstreets guns were heard, Ewellopened a cannonade, which after an hoursfiring was overpowered by the Federal ar-tillery on Cemetery Hill. Johnsons divisionthen advanced, and found only one brigade—Greenes—of the Twelfth Corps in position,the others having been sent to the aid ofSickles at the Peach Orchard. Greene foughtwith skill and determination for two or threehours, and, reenforced by seven of eight hun-dred men of the First and Eleventh Corps,succeeded in holding his own intrenchments,the enemy taking possession of the abandonedworks of Geary and Ruger. Earlys attack wasmade with great spirit, by Hokes and Averysbrigades, Gordons being in reserve; the hillwas ascended through the wide ravine be-tween Cemetery and Culps hills, a line ofinfantry on the slopes was broken, and Wied-erichs Eleventh Corps, and Rickettss reservebatteries near the brow of the hill overrun;but the excellent position of Stevenss twelve-pounders at the head of the ravine, whichenabled him to sweep it, the arrival of Carrollsbrigade sent unasked by Hancock,— a happyinspiration, as this line had been weakenedto send supports both to Greene and Sickles,—and the failure of Rodes to cooperate with Early, caused the attack to miscarry.
