THE SIEGE OF VICKSBURG. 755 stroyed the bridge across the Big Black, sothat the balance of the day and night wasspent in building bridges across that stream. We crossed on the morning of the i8th,and the outworks of Vicksburg were reachedbefore night, the army taking position in theirfront. On the 19th there was continuous skir-mishing with the enemy while we were gettinginto better positions. Ihe enemys troops hadbeen much demoralized by their defeats atChampions Hill and the Big Black, and 1 be-lieved he would not make much of an effortto hold Vicksburg. Accordingly at two oclockI ordered an assault. It resulted in securingmore advanced positions for all our troops,where they were fully covered from the fireof the enemy, and the siege of Vicksburgbegan. The 20th and 21st were spent in strength-ening our position, and in making roads inrear of the army, from Vazoo river or Chicka-saw bayou.
