At the request of the Editor, General Badeau has given thehistory of the dispatch in the following letter: On Sunday afternoon, the^th of April, 1865, as General Grantwas riding to his headquarters from the farm-house in which he hadreceived the surrender of Lee, it occurred to him that he had madeno report of the event to the Government. He halted at once anddismounted, with his staff, in a rough field, within the Nationallines. Sitting on a stone, he asked for paper. I happened to be near, and offered him my memorandum-book, such as staff-offi-cers often carry for orders or reports in the field.
