under the base ofthe turret before going tosea, in order to make sureof a water-tight joint; butthis expedient failed alto-gether, the sea graduallywashing out the oakum inthose places where it hadbeen loosely packed, there-by permitting so large aquantity of water to enterunder the turret, fully sixty-three feet in circumference,that the centrifugal pump-ing-engine had not suffi-cient power to expel it.The hull consequently filledgradually and settled, untilat the expiration of aboutfour hours the battery wentto the bottom. It will beasked, in view of the pre-ceding explanation of theconstruction of the moni-tor turrets, namely, thatthe smooth base of the tur-ret forms a water-tight jointwith the ring on the deck,why was oakum packedunder the turret beforegoing to Charleston ?
