Text Appearing Before Image:
p at ElizabethtownThomas Lincoln had learned what he knew of thecarpenters art, met and sheltered them until theywere safely housed on a piece of land which he hadselected for them five miles further westward. Hehad preceded them over a year, and had in themeantime hewed out a few timbers to be used inthe construction of their cabin. The place he hadselected was on a bluff overlooking the Sangamonriver,—for these early settlers must always be insight of a running stream,—well supplied with tim-ber. Text Appearing After Image:
ou o U o THE LIFE OF LINCOLN. 61 experience in the art of building that his servicescorresponded to those of the more modern super-vising architect. With the aid of the oxen and aplow John and Abe broke up fifteen acres of sod,and Abe and myself,,, observes Hanks in a mat-ter-of-fact way, split rails enough to fence theplace in. As they swung their axes, or withwedge and maul split out the rails, how strange tothem the thought would have seemed that thoseself-same rails were destined to make one of themimmortal. If such a vision flashed before the mindof either he made no sign of it, but each kept stead-ily on in his simple, unromantic task. Abe had now attained his majority and began tothrow from his shoulders the vexations of parentalrestraint. He had done his duty to his father, andfelt able to begin life on his own account. As hesteps out into the broad and inviting world we takehim up for consideration as a man. At the sametime we dispense with further notice of his father,Thomas
