At length I said, Suppose you are right, that our Govern-ment cannot last part free and part slave, what good is to be accom-plished by inculcating that opinion (or truth, if you please) in theminds of the people? After some minutes reflection he rose andapproached me, extending his right hand to take mine, and said, From respect for your judgment, Dickey, Ill promise you I wontteach the doctrine again during this campaign. —Letter, T. Having patientlylistened to these various criticisms from his friends—all of which with a single exception were ad-verse—he rose from his chair, and after alluding tothe careful study and intense thought he had giventhe question, he answered all their objections sub-stantially as follows: Friends, this thing has beenretarded long enough. The time has come whenthese sentiments should be uttered; and if it isdecreed that I should go down because of thisspeech, then let me go down linked to the truth—let me die in the advocacy of what is just andright. The next day, the 17th, the speech wasdelivered just as we had heard it read. Up to thistime Seward had held sway over the North by his higher-law sentiments, but the house-divided-against-itself speech by Lincoln in my opiniondrove the nail
