N. W. Miner, who was pastorof the First Baptist Church of Springfield,Illinois, and an old friend and neighbor ofMr. Lincoln, writes as follows: Mrs. Lin-coln informed me that the last day helived was the happiest of his life. Thevery last moments of his conscious lifewere spent in conversation with her abouthis future plans, and what he wanted to dowhen his term of office expired. He saidhe wanted to visit the Holy Land and seethose places hallowed by the footprints ofthe Saviour. He was saying there was nocity he so much desired to see as Jerusalem;and with the words half spoken on histongue, the bullet of the assassin enteredthe brain, and the soul of the great andgood President was carried by the angelsto the New Jerusalem above.*
