rgythan he displayed. Generals A. P.Howe, Sickles, Graham, Double-day, Birney, Wadsworth, andHunt all thought great damagecould have been inflicted uponthe enemy by an immediate coun-tercharge. After Picketts failureon the 3d, Pleasonton beggedMeade, when they stood togetheron Eound Top, to order a generaladvance of his whole army in pursuit of the enemy, but thegeneral preferred to order him, with his cavalry, to find outwhether they were really fallingback, which, of course, occupiedso much time as to amount to anegative decision. Hancock ismost unqualified in his opinionthat an advance should have beenmade. There were, he says, only two divisions of the enemyon our extreme left oppositeEound Top, and there was a gapin their line of one mile thattheir assault had left, and I be-lieve if our whole line hadadvanced with spirit it is not un-likely that we would have takenall their artillery at that point. Report Committee on Conduct of the War, 1865. Vol. I., p. 408. 270 ABRAHAM LINCOLN
Text Appearing After Image:
DISPOSITIONS FOR THE CAVALRY BATTLE. The left-hand margin of this map coincides (excepting the scale) with theupper part of the right hand margin of the map on pages 264 and 265. GETTYSBURG 271 General Lee had one moment of supreme exulta-tion and triumph on this memorable afternoon; itwas when he saw the blue flag of Virginia, borne byPicketts troops, waving on the crest of CemeteryEidge among the Union guns. His gratificationlasted only an instant, for, a moment later, hesaw the Virginia battle-flags dropping thickly streets artillery, says: I have Chap. IX. General Warren, while joining inthe same opinion, gives a glimpseof the feeling which, perhaps, wasthe controlling motive that pre-vented the advance. We werevery much shattered in that re-spect (of important officers killedand wounded), and there was atone among most of the promi-nent officers that we had quitesaved the country for the time, and that we had done enough;that we might jeopard all thatwe had won by trying to do too
