It was,like most of his speeches, addressed principally tohis opponents, and in this short space he appealedsuccessively to their reason, to their sympathies,and to their fears. By a succession of unanswer-able syllogisms he showed them how untenable wastheir position. He appealed to their generosity,to their sense of duty, to their patriotism, even totheir love of glory, and in the end he held out tothem with dignified austerity the prospect of shameand self-reproach which lay before them if theycontinued their hostility to the sacred cause ofhumanity and nationality.
