General Grant arrived at HollySprings on the 23d of December, where he re-mained a fortnight, leaving a part of McPhersonscommand on the Tallahatchie, while most of histroops were engaged in reopening and guardingthe railroad from Memphis to Corinth. The dispatch of General Grant, ordering Mc-Clernand to take charge of the expedition fromMemphis, as we have said, miscarried, the wireshaving been cut by Forrests troopers, but theletter containing the same orders reached McCler-nand at Springfield, and he immediately started forhis post. Sherman, in the mean time, not knowingthat he had been superseded in command, starteddown the river on the 20th of December, ignorantalso of the cavalry raids of Forrest and Van Dorn,which had put an end to Grants advance upon the ibid., p. Dec, 1862. taking on 12,000 more at Helena, hesteamed down the river and reached MillikensBend, twenty miles above Vicksburg, on the morn-ing of the 25th. Here he landed A. J. Smiths divi-sion to break np the Shreveport Eailroad, whichsupplied Vicksburg with provisions from the West.The other three divisions went on to the mouth ofthe Yazoo River, and moving up that stream sometwelve miles, they disembarked on the swampybottoms at the foot of Walnut Hills, where theywere joined by Smiths division a day later. Both Grant and Sherman had counted upon a sur-prise in this movement, but, in the nature of the case,no surprise was possible.
