It was after four oclockwhen Hoods division was thrown with the greatestviolence upon the refused line of General Sickles. A desperate and sanguinary conflict raged alongthat line. For nearly two hours Birneys divisionbore the brunt of the fight; they received and in-flicted great damage, both armies fighting withequal and desperate courage. General Sickles wasborne from the field, his leg having been shotaway, shortly after six oclock, and Birney suc-ceeded, temporarily, to the command of the corps.Meantime McLaws had attacked Humphreys onthe Emmitsburg road, to the north of the PeachOrchard, and, when the salient angle was broken,Humphreys was finally forced to retire to CemeteryRidge.
