To this preposterous proposition Johnstonnaturally replied that the order of the Presidentmust stand unless it were countermanded. Hardeeand Stewart then joined Hood in a telegram toJefferson Davis, requesting that the order for re-moval be suspended, at least until the fate ofAtlanta was decided. Jefferson Davis at oncereplied, A change of commanders under existingcircumstances was regarded as so objectionablethat I only accepted it as the alternative of continu-ing a policy which has proven disastrous. . .
