, Mr.James C. Hall, of Toledo, O., formally announcing himself as ajgg^ candidate. A committee of Senators, representatives, and citi-zens was formed to bring about his nomination. (/) A circularwas issued by Senator Pomeroy and others advocating the selectionof Mr. Chase. Mr. Thaddeus Stevens, of Pennsylvania, one of themost influential members of Congress, was opposed to the renominationof Mr. Lincoln.() A friend of Mr. Stevens visited the Capitol. In-troduce me to some of the members who are friendly to Mr. Lincoln,he said. Mr. Stevens took him to Isaac JST. Arnold, member from Illinois. You are the only one I know, said Mr. Stevens, who favors therenomination of Lincoln, and I have come to introduce my friend toyou. Thank you, replied Mr. Arnold ; •• I know many members whowant him renominated. I will present your friend to them. () If the question could be submitted to the people, said Mr. Stevens,in a speech, the majority of them would vote for General BenjaminF. Butler. (^)

THADDEUS STEVENS. SPRING OF 1864. 395 People in foreign countries were watching the conflict between free-dom and slavery with much interest. Count Gasparin, of France, pub-lished a volume entitled, The Uprising of a Great People. He ad-mired President Lincoln, and wrote a letter to a friend in the UnitedStates, in which the hope was expressed that he would be renominated.The letter was sent to Horace Greeley, who replied as follows: Tliose who know the least about the wa) things are managed in Wasliington want3Ir. Lincoln renominated, and I presume they will have their way. I match their judg-ment with that of Congress, whereof not one-third of the Unionists desire Mr. Lincolnsrenomination, and not half can be constrained to seem to oppose it even by the terror ofpopular reprobation. Count Gasparin, 3500 miles away, is naturally even more decidedand zealous than any one in Connecticut. Well, 10,000 miles away he would be stillmore so. I am not accustomed to allow majoiitie.s to dicta
