On to Richmond ! the cry. A like activity in the Sonth had organized two large Confederatearmies: one at the Manassas Junction, under Beauregard; one in theShenandoah Yalley, under General Johnston. The Confederates hadbeen swept out of West A^irginia and Missouri. Eastern Tennessee haddeclared for the Union. President Lincoln earnestly desired to send abody of troops to aid in holding that section of the State. Judge Eob-ertson and another gentleman hastened to Washington to protest againstthe marching of Union troops across Kentucky. The President heardwhat they had to say: That Kentucky must be neutral.
