  • A copy photograph probably made from the 1860 mezzotint by Thomas Doney, which was based on a photo taken in 1857 by Alexander Hesler.
  • "A likeness based on Hesler's photograph is Thomas Doney's mezzotint, first published in 1860. On July 30, 1860, Lincoln wrote to Doney and thanked him for a copy of 'the picture (I know not the artistic designation).' Meserve considered it a second pose from the Hesler sitting of 1857." (Source: Ostendorf, p. 257)
  • Printed on back of mount: W.R. McCormick, with Mrs. W.A. Reed, Quincy, Ill.
  • Handwritten on back of mount: "1858 & 60; Hon. John H. Nichalay [i.e. Nicolay], Washington, USA; Compliments of K.K. (?) Jones, Quincy, Ill."
