A yearearlier, visiting an editor friend in Pittsfield, Nicolayhad written the editorial (see reprint) urging Abra-ham Lincoln as a presidential candidate. Tuesday, Feb. 9, is an impor-tant date vi the history of Pikecounty and Pittsfield! Why? One hundred years ago yes-terday, a young man in hisearly twenties was visiting inPittsfield. He had for severalyears been the editor of theFree Press and had spenthis youth in Pike county. Butnow he was living in the statecapital and working in the of-fice of another Pike Countian,Secretary of State Hatch ofGriggsville. He did, however,have a sweetheart here in Pitts-field and no doubt in additionto visiting his old friends onthe square he was also attractedhere to call on her.
