Tall, lean, kindly, furrow-faced,black-haired. . . . ? HIRSUTE TOUCHES Artist Albert Herter, father ofUndersecretary of State ChristianA. Herter, saw him in a differentlight. He painted an ivory minia-ture of the Great Emancipatorwith grown hair and beard. Infact, Herters Lincoln had hirsutetouches approaching the titiao. Atty. Maurice E. Goldberg of207 Commonwealth Ave. broughtthe delicately-wrought miniature into The Herald office and calledattention to the hair coloring. Wasnt the hair jet-black? heasked. And if Herter was right,isnt everybody else wrong? An exhaustive search of TheHeralds files failed to establishthe point. At the Boston Public Library,Martin Waters of the history de-partment dug into the subjectand came up with a verdict: Lincoins hair was black, just aseverybody believed.
