Description
English: Portal building of the Abbey of O-L-V of Nazareth.

(Protected as an urban landscape K.B. 3 June 1986)

This gate from 1616 is a remnant of the Abbey of our Lady of Nazareth. Over five centuries (1235-1797) there were sisters of the Cistercian Order in Lier. ‘Seven manners of Minne’, a mystical treat is by the hand of the first priory Beatrice of Nazareth. The monastery was completely destroyed in 1579 during the religious wars. The sisters then stayed in their refugium within the city walls. The whole was rebuilt in the early 17 century, but after the French Revolution the monastery was sold and almost completely demolished. Only the gate building and a barn remained. Above the gate, both on the street side and on the inner side, the stone faces have been worked in with the coat of arms of two former abdises.
