Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Abbey Mill The old mill buildings are now a private house and the leat below is very overgrown. Below the buildings is the start of Abbey Rapids, the hardest bit of paddling on the trip from Barnard Castle to Whorlton. The river starts wide, with the normal line right over river right in most water levels. At this level (very low for paddling), this is the only feasible line, although more options open up in high water. Immediately the rapid starts, a well-concealed rock appears suddenly, and this is a popular place for those new to the rapid to get hung up and capsized. It is usually possible to get to the bank quickly, however, before the river narrows down and speeds up in the main rapid below.
