En 1908, après le départ des moines, l’abbaye est rachetée par Gustave et Madeleine Fayet qui entreprennent la restauration et la redécoration des lieux. Fontaines, statues et autres éléments décoratifs sont apportés à Fontfroide. Leur empreinte la plus remarquée, certainement, sera la pose de nouveaux vitraux par l’artiste Richard Burghstal. Loin de la grisaille cistercienne, ces vitraux illuminent l’église de leurs couleurs au gré de la lumière, avec, en fin de journée, la Rosace de la Création du Monde trônant à l’Ouest. Aujourd’hui, la restauration se poursuit encore, architectes, compagnons, tailleurs de pierre continuent le travail de leurs prédécesseurs, sous le regard des héritiers de Gustave et Madeleine Fayet. |
