Summary

[edit]
Description
English: An abandoned waste weir, at 39.49 miles, on the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. According to Hahn, This is an example of the original style of waste weir, made of masonry blocks which would have had wooden boards above it. (Hahn, Towpath Guide, p. 75). This is just a short ways above Lock 26, at 39.49 miles. These waste weirs were mostly replaced with concrete waste weirs around 1909. National Park Service says: "The stone wings of the original wasteweir and contemporary riprap are visible on the river side of the towpath and sides of the creek. The masonry and wood wasteweir was covered over when it was no longer needed, and riprap was placed along the bank below the towpath. This is a preserved example of an original wasteweir, but the majority of the structure is underwater." [1]
