Summary
[edit]DescriptionAbandoned Railway - geograph.org.uk - 150982.jpg |
English: Abandoned Railway The 1970s 1:25,000 had this correct calling it an abandoned railway rather than dismantled, especially as a railway never existed for it to be torn up. These are earthworks from the proposed Ouse Valley Line an attempt by the LBSCR to outflank its rivals by building a line from the main London-Brighton line south of Balcombe Viaduct first to Uckfield, then on to Hailsham before eventually finishing at Hastings. Work began in 1866 and stopped in February 1867 initially due to floods but for good once a major railway financing bank collapsed causing the railway building boom to burst. All that remains are a few cuttings, embankments, and bridges north of Haywards Heath and to the west of Uckfield. The footpath runs beneath what probably would have been a small farm bridge. |
