English: The Sacrifice of Isaac (left side), Limestone capital, 2nd half of 11th century, Church of St. Foy, Conques, France. In this unusual disposition of the elements of the story, the ram in the bushes is on the left side of the capital and half of the angel is on the right side. The angel reaches for Isaac's left arm while Abraham holds his right, poised to strike with his sword. Isaac sits on an altar. |
