parallel with the railway line. We gotglimpses of the river on our left, but the appearance of thestream can hardly be said to have prepared us for the tre-mendous rush of water we were so soon to see. Reaching the gorge, we turned off the line, and wereface to face with a rushing mighty torrent of water, fallingwith feverish haste over the precipice, dashing itself into afury of white foam as it made its way over rocks, boulders,or any obstacle that stood in the way of its headlong rushto the depths of the gorge, looo feet below. A broken side of the gorge forms a ridge jutting to thecentre of the canon, and sloping downwards makes a curve, and ends abruptly in front of the falls. Down this roughridge, steps and an enticing zig-zag path have been cut, toenable the visitor to reach the desirable views, and thelower level. The men, divesting themselves of as much clothing aswas compatible with decency, went the whole way down. The two ladies did not feel disposed to go farther, while I,
Text Appearing After Image:
CAIRNS TO MANILA 261 meaning to venture only a little way, was lured from cornerto corner, getting yet another, and as I fancied, a still moreinspiring view, until I was a good half-way to the bottom. Discretion forced me to turn and begin the ascent, andI must confess I was glad I had gone no farther when I sawthe moist and distressed condition of the men when theyreached the top. We all felt grateful to the two who hadboiled the water and prepared the much-appreciated tea, which restored our wilted forces for the walk home. Without wishing to detract one iota from the majestyand beauty of these falls, it would never occur to me tocompare them in any way with Niagara, the Victoria Fallsof the Zambesi, or other big falls of Europe. Another walk I enjoyed immensely was to Stony HillView. The way lay over an enchanting track through a bitof real jungle, pencil cedar, red cedar, silky oak, black oak,red and white beech, Cyprus pine, and kami pine predomi-nating. All these are covered once
