Title
A wheel thrown rim sherd of probable Nene Valley colour-coated ware, dating from the 2nd-4th centuries AD.
Description
English: A wheel thrown rim sherd of probable Nene valley ware (39mm x 24.5mm; thickness: 11.3mm; weight: 10.24g). The fill of the smoothy-textured sherd is an orange-brown sandwiching grey-brown. The surface coated in a dark brown/ red - black colour with what appears to be white slip scrollwork, which would date the sherd to the 3rd/ 4th centuries. Fine and small inclusions throughout the fill of probable quartz. The sherd is in a worn but fair condition.

Nene Valley-colour-coated wares have a variety of forms which include a wide range of tablewares, including jugs, flagons and bottles, imitation samian forms, Castor boxes, cups and beakers (Tyers, 1996, page 173).

The production of Nene Valley wares starts mid 2nd century and continues late 4th century. The source of the wares are centred around Water Newton in the Lower Nene Valley. Much of the distribution of the wares spread throughout Eastern England (Tyers, 1996, pages 173-5).
