Their history while atBrington seems somewhat obscure, but Robert,grandson of the mayor, died without issue inL622. A tablet to his memory is still to be seenat Brington Church showing the true WashingtonCoat of Arms from which the Stars and Stripesare supposed to have originated. LawrenceWashington the other brother raised a largefamily, three of his sons attaining distinction,the first became Sir William Washington andmarried the sister of the Duke of Buckingham.The second became Sir John Washington andthe third Reverend Lawrence Washington whosuffered for his loyalty to the Royal cause, his sonJohn emigrated to America in 1657 and becamethe grandfather of General George Washington.
