sation Society once asked him tohouse a pair of Wonga pigeons, and as we haveseen, his services were often in request as editorto other naturalists writings. Thus, recognisingthe value of a series of articles on Cranes, contri-buted to the Field by the late Edward Blyth,one of the most able zoologists of his day, someseven years after Blyths death he reprintedthe series in book form, in 1881, with someadditions and many illustrations. Under thetitle of The Natural History of the Cranes, byW. B. Tegetmeier and Edward Blyth, it waspublished by Horace Cox at half-a-guinea, andproved a very useful monograph on this curiousgroup of birds. It was said of him that heappeared to be largely superior to mere literaryambition, and so long as he got his facts properlyestablished and recorded, he was quite contentto let the personal credit go. He was, indeed,says this Yorkshire writer on natural history, an adept in finding merit in other mens work,and he would on occasion bring scattered articles

A good example of a work he wrote incollaboration with a living expert is the bookon Horses, Asses, Zebras, Mules, and Mule-breeding, which he did with the aid of his friendColonel Charles L. Sutherland, with whom hewas brought in touch by his study of Hybridityand Cross-breeding. Colonel Sutherland waslargely interested in the breeding of mules forthe Army service in India, and had his advicebeen followed, says Tegetmeier, it would haveprevented the need for the importation of some50,000 mules from America for service in theSouth African War. This work, of great practicaland permanent value, was the fruit of muchpersonal research and enquiry, particularly intothe methods of French mule-breeders.
