ived the bird the following day infine condition, and (not having any Chats by me at the moment)took it to Mr. Howard Saunders, who (was just then writingthe Chats for his Manual of British Birds, and) kindly pointedout to me its identity with specimens of S. isabellina in hispossession. The bird was also examined in the flesh by Dr. R.B. Sharpe, but especially by Mr. Seebohm, who compared it inmy presence with his extensive series of Saxicolina3. Mr. Hartingsaw the specimen before skinning, so did Mr. G. E. Lodge, whomade a coloured sketch of it (now in the possession of the familyat Aigle Gill). The bird was also exhibited on my behalf byMr. Howard Saunders at a meeting of the Zoological Society ofLondon on Dec. 6th (1887). It proved upon dissection to be afemale, and the retention of some delicate bars upon the lowerbreast seems to indicate that it is a bird of the year. The irideswere dark hazel, legs and bill black. Total length, 65 ins.;wing, 3f ins. The stomach was empty. . . .

BIRDS 93 The Isabelline Wheatear is new to Western Europe. Itsrange eastward and southward is extensive, including Somali-land and Nubia, Palestine, Asia Minor, Greece, the Caucasus,Afghanistan, and the N.W. Provinces of India; in Kussia,Mr. Seebohm received eggs of this Chat from Sarepta; he hasalso two skins from Krasnoyarsk, Siberia. It visits the regionof Lake Baikal on migration, breeds commonly in Dauria, andwas obtained by Pere David in the neighbourhood of Pekin. It has been recorded from Madagascar/ It only remains to add that Prejevalsky pronounced this Chatto be an exquisite songster. WHINCHAT. Pratincola rubetra (L.). The sweet song of this common summer visitant may be heardin most of the less elevated districts of our faunal region, espe-cially where extensive meadow lands afford plenty of roughcover. I have met it numerously near Kendal and Windermere; itabounds in one or two localities near Carlisle, and is very plentifulnear Drumburgh, but becomes rather more scarce in
