nderstood how it was that the English loved it: verybeautiful, always fresh and green. The countrymansions he thought splendid: In the country theEnglishman lives like a great lord; in London he liveslike private folk. Of course he was charmed with the Thames Valley. Nothing can be prettier. I cannot understand howthe Englishman can make up his mind to leave thiscountry, as many prefer to do, to go to others lessfavoured by Nature. The climate here is mild, neverthe excess of heat or cold with which one is oppressedin other lands. True that the fruits are not so good ;no grape-vines, but their absence is compensated forby vessel-loads of wines from Spain and Portugal. One pleasant thing in this country is that one never seesmiserably-clad peasants ; all are well lodged, well-clad,well-fed. They are happier than many a provincialgentleman I know. Had I but one thousand poundssterling a year, I would give up all that the mostbrilliant fortune could offer me elsewhere, and live inEngland.

During his first visit to England Pollnitz, as we haveseen, had made a bold, though unsuccessful, attempt inliterature. His precious Cunegunde emerged from her ob-scurity, and in 1732 burst out again into the full blazeof publicity, appearing in London in French, as theHistoire Secrette de la Duchesse de Hanovre, Epousede Georges Premier, Roi de la Grande Bretagne ; themisfort
