The* country round about is rolling and hillyand very beautiful. Throughout the town and aroundthe Abbey an almost unbroken stillness reigns. Thesong of birds interrupted by the occasional caw of arook is the only sound I hear as I write. Everything Ilook at seems to embody forth a reminiscence of SirWalter. The Abbey is an interesting and melancholysight. Birds fly through the grand old windows; aroundthe crumbling towers, and under the ruined archways,unconscious that this old pile is hallowed by associations,and immortalized in song. It is built of very hard stone,and where it still stands it is plain and clearly cut, manyparts being not affected by the elements and time, andshowing excellent workmanship. half of the entire structure having been torn down andthe stone used in building houses. Over a part of theruins grow bushes, grass and moss. In some places onthe roof and tops of walls a large amount of soil hasaccumulated merely from decay and dust, being nearlyeighteen inches thick, with plants and bushes growingthere, the seed of which was probably carried there bythe birds. On the north side of the nave are the marksof Cromwells cannon balls. Intimately associated withthe Abbey is Scotts Lay of the Last Minstrel. Asone stands within the grand and gloomy walls, thescenes and incidents of the Minstrel pass before him likea panorama. Here is a small postern gate throughwhich William of Deloraine entered on his midnight visitto the wizard, Michael Scott. There is the aged monksstone cell, here the broad stone over the wizard, uponwhich fell the Cross of red. Such a spell has Scottstale of the wizard created, that many of the simple folks,if out at night, constantly expect to see the
