Acontinuous muscular envelope is thus formed, which surrounds thewhole of the uterus, Fallopian tubes, and ovaries. Its function isnot yet thoroughly established. It is supposed to have the effect ofretracting the stretched folds of peritoneum after delivery, and moreespecially of bringing the entire generative organs into harmoniousaction during menstruation and the sexual orgasm; in this wayexplaining, as we shall subsequently see, the mechanism by whichthe fimbriated extremity of the Fallopian tube grasps the ovary priorto the rupture of a Graafian follicle. Round Ligaments.—The round ligaments are essentially muscularin structure.
